The Forge on Broadway is a new affordable housing development – by a team of community driven development companies including SAA|EVI, R+A+R and SCG Development – at the site of the former Buffalo Forge. Our newly built, affordable apartments located at 490 Broadway Street in Buffalo, NY contain 158-units of mixed income multi-family homes with amenities like an indoor gym, green roof, playground and running track. About 80% of the apartments will be reserved for residents earning at or below 60% of the median income for a family of four in Erie County of $67,300. The remaining 20% of the apartments will be for tenants earning at or below 80% of the median, or up to $87,490.
The Buffalo Forge Company was founded in 1878 and was once the largest employer in the City of Buffalo. The original industrial manufacturer of forges, fans, air handling equipment and machine tools stood on Broadway street between Mortimer and Spring street right where the new Forge on Broadway stands today. Its facility and employees worked tirelessly to create their universal products, all stamped with their signature “Buffalo” name that was recognizable internationally.
The Buffalo Forge closed its doors for good in the 1993 and the building was eventually demolished in 2006. However, in spite of the building no longer being there, the lasting impact of the company lives on. Thanks to the contributions of the Buffalo Forge, we now live more comfortable and safe lives because of the dramatic leaps in technology accomplished by those who worked in the factory.
At the site where the new Forge on Broadway stands, technology like air handling ventilation and air conditioning were invented by engineers employed at the Buffalo Forge. With the construction of the new Forge, it was important to keep the memory and heritage of the original site alive for future generations. Graphics in the building and The Forge on Broadway brand reflect the aesthetics of the former Buffalo Forge in homage to the old factory and their contributions to modern life.
